Internal Communications
Book
Today’s a big day for us — and, we hope, a meaningful moment for our profession. People-First Internal Communication, our new Kogan Page book, is officially out in the world.
We wrote this book because internal communication is at a crossroads. For too long, we’ve been stuck in old patterns: chasing channels, polishing campaigns, trying to “get a seat at the table.” Meanwhile, the world of work has shifted underneath us. Employees expect more. Leaders need more. Organisations can’t afford comms that simply broadcast — they need comms that connect.

People-First IC is our answer.

The book introduces a bold but practical new way of thinking about internal communication, and provides the toolkit to make it a reality. It reframes our role around what really matters:

  • Creating meaningful, human-centred experiences
  • Understanding people deeply
  • Designing communication that solves real problems
  • And strengthening the six human strengths every future-ready communicator needs:
curiosity, creativity, resilience, empathy, influence and courage

Across the chapters, we share the context, models, stories and tools that have shaped our work — from the People-First IC Capability Model, to the EX Lens, to the People-First Design Loop. Forming a new operating model for our profession, they help communicators move beyond the old expert-at-the-centre mindset and step into a more strategic, influential, people-first way of working.

And yes, it’s practical. Ridiculously practical. You’ll find exercises, diagnostics, questions, case studies, examples and ways to put everything into practice the very next day.

But more than anything, this book is a call to action. A challenge to our profession to step up, evolve and lead IC in a new and exciting direction. To stop fearing AI and learn how to collaborate with it. To stop chasing outputs and start designing experiences that matter. To play a defining role in shaping a more human world of work.

We genuinely believe this is a turning point for internal communication — and we’re super excited to share it with you.
